Fan Fiction: Real Writing or Not?

I’ve been a secret lurker of FanFiction.Net for about a year now, consuming stories from both the "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age" universes, but just recently started to create my own.

Some writers feel fan fiction is a cop out with its already-established characters and for some, plot lines. I take a different stance. What about it being a great way to exercise the writing muscles? When you’re on a treadmill you’re not actually running a marathon, but you could be training for one. Isn’t the same true for fan fiction?

What do you think?

  1. That is not a bad way to look at it. Training I mean. I have never really read fan fiction based on established characters. I feel it will muddle my memory with regards to continuity of continuing stories. If it makes the writer and other fans happy its all good.

  2. My roomate has read a majority of the "good" content on fanfiction.net. Fan fiction is usually based on a good premise or a neat idea that would be interesting to explore, exept for self-insert fan fiction, or when they mary sue a random character. But otherwise it can explore some really amazing stuff. Just don't correct those people on their grammar or spelling, they will rage and then never update.

In my opinion, it is the best form of writing. People who love the story and the characters, writing it out.
